Janaina Mello Landini

Janaina Mello Landini (Brazil, b. 1974) lives and works in São Paulo. Trained in architecture before studying Fine Arts at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, her practice draws on architecture, mathematics, and the natural sciences to explore the interconnected systems that shape both human and environmental experience. Through sculpture, drawing, and large-scale installations, Landini investigates notions of scale, rhythm, time, and multiplicity, creating works that reveal the invisible networks and trajectories that connect individual elements into larger structures.

Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Zipper Galeria, São Paulo, Brazil, and the Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire, France, and has been presented at institutions including the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France. More recently, her work was featured in the 13th Mercosul Biennial, Porto Alegre, Brazil. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions across Brazil, France, the Netherlands, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates. Her work is held in major public and private collections, including the Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Fondation Carmignac, France; the BIC Collection, France; and Meta, Menlo Park, United States, among others.

In the Ciclotramas series, Janaina Mello Landini transforms ordinary ropes into intricate, branching structures by meticulously unraveling them into thousands of delicate strands. Through a labor-intensive process of deconstruction and reconstruction, the material expands into complex networks that evoke root systems, river deltas, neural pathways, and vascular formations.

Suspended between drawing, sculpture, and architecture, these works explore the interconnectedness of natural and human-made systems. Individual threads merge into larger organisms, revealing patterns of growth, movement, and exchange that extend beyond the singular element. At once precise and organic, Ciclotramas reflects Landini’s ongoing investigation into the invisible forces that bind bodies, landscapes, and communities into ever-evolving networks of relation.
